Got work started on my second tattoo - a phoenix curling down the inside of my left forearm, done in a vaguely traditional-tattoo style.  I remember being little and watching my mum draw and paint the original before getting it tattooed on her hip, and the phoenix has always made me think of her.  Hence the main reason for getting it, and the tattooist did a wonderful job in recreating her own style so that they're essentially identical.  *wiggles happily* 

(Incidentally, she was also the inspiration for my pseudonym, way back in '02 when it was still just 'Phoenix'.  Always been more of a dragons-and-wolves type of person, but hopefully in a few years I'll be able to get a matching dragon flowing down my right forearm.)

So, M. Night Shyamalan is making Avatar into a live-action film due for release next summer.  Um.  Yeah.

I'm horrified that my lovely Prince Zuko was nearly played by Jesse McCartney (thank god screaming fans can still make a difference when it counts), but the rest of the casting is still rather wtf.  Will this be another Dragonball Evolution-style disaster, or a box-office underdog powerhouse?  WHO KNOWS.

The next chapter for Eir's Tomorrow is FINISHED, it just needs to go under the beta knife of artimusdin  and then I'll post it when I can.

Around three this morning I had to have my mum taken to the hospital - even in the three weeks I've been here I've seen her health decline impossibly fast.  The next few days are ones for observation, and then after that...well, who knows.  I just wanted to reiterate once more that I am still writing, but it might be a while before you see even this new chapter, and hopefully the quality, such as it is, hasn't suffered too much.  (It has Sephiroth and Cloud finally talking to one another, btw, and I hope you all know that artimusdin was quite determined to convince me to leave you all with a cliffie just before The Big Moment You've All Wanted.  *cheerfully pushes the flailing in her direction*)

I'm the kind of person whose anxiety manifests as either OCD or inappropriate humor, and I swear the house hasn't been this clean for months.  Yes, this amuses me.  I've found cat fur in places cat fur should never be.  I think  I'm also lucky that the EMTs didn't throw me out of the ambulance with my OOH WHAT DOES THIS DO and WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT and THESE ROLLING CHAIRS ARE KINDA LIKE DR EVIL'S WITH THE WAY YOU CAN'T STOP SLIDING ALL OVER THE ER.

Note: Bastard fusions of FF7, FF8, and FFX canon to KH.  Things like potions, materia, and moogles have been retained because mundane AUs are boring as hell to write.  Unbetaed.

The book I bought at the shop mentioned in my earlier post is called The Shock Doctrine, by Naomi Klein.  It details the effectiveness of 'shock and awe' methods used by authorities wanting to make severe changes in a given region; in this case, fundamentalist capitalism and its use of disaster (war, hurricane, etc) to privatize formerly public institutions and essentially remake the region from scratch.

It also talks about actual shock, like the kind used in torture.  Or in CIA-funded psychological experiments on brainwashing and 'coercive interrogation' techniques.

On the one hand, it's interesting in an academic sense - and also because I could totally see Hojo using these same techniques on Cloud, which would finally explain why ShinRa might have wanted to know how to 'transplant' or artificially build a personality.  On the other...I can only read a few pages at a time before I have to put the book down and take a few deep breaths, because fuck me sideways if Klein doesn't provide enough exhaustive footnotes and alternative sources in her presentation for personal verification.

Admittedly I feel a little bad for giving a charity worker a hard time, but those guys seem to ooze out of the fucking woodwork whenever a college student passes.  I think it's the widespread belief that we students are idealistic enough to be susceptible to this kind of thing, but what would I know?

I also don't think he understood why I brought up the socialist aspect of my destination.

After something rosalui  said in the comments of the previous post, I went ahead and made a new comm for those of us who have or have had long hair.  Fic/fanart sporkings, personal stories and tips, I don't care - BECAUSE LONG HAIR IS SRS BZNS U GAIZ.

Some pet peeves about fandom's interpretation of Duo:

1. Hair that long kept in a constant braid and, in all likelihood, very rarely washed, given the boys' constant firefights...will not fall in a chestnut curtain of shiny.  It will be stiff, knotted, and altogether not worth taking out of its braid unless he's prepared to spend an hour or three grooming.

2. Duo is a street-rat.  This means he is unlikely to be overly concerned with food or tend to spend money on shit unnecessary to the mission - if anyone's going to do that, it would most likely be Quatre, who grew up in the lap of luxury.  As long as he's got his knife and boomsticks, he don't need shit else.

3. I seriously believe he's the least likely to get into a situation in which he's raped.  Heero would be oblivious to the social nuances of a situation. Quatre would be unlikely to even consider the possibility.  Wufei would probably go into the situation anyway believing he could handle himself.  Trowa is more like Duo and probably go OH HEY THOSE GUYS LOOK LIKE THEY WANT SOME SURPRIZ BUTTSECKS, BETTER NOT WALK OVER THERE.

4. ...You really think a kid as traumatized as Duo AND a soldier is going to go OMG HEERO I WUV YOU?  Please.

5.  Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Duo as very willing to be 'uke,' at least in the beginning of a relationship and certainly not for a one-night stand.  He's probably grown up thinking of male penetration as a way to dominate or humiliate.

I dunno, a lot of this is just personal interpretation.  But goddamnit, Duo is not a fuzzy wuzzy woobie.  *huffs*  We need more people, in the way of one brilliant maldoror_gw , to write more anarchist!badass!Duo.

(On a tangent, I admit that Wufei has finally found a place in my heart as my favourite Gundam boy.  He doesn't get enough IC love from fandom.)
